How Can I Help My Toddler Stay Calm in the Dental Chair?

Posted .

If you are having a tough time helping your toddler stay calm, comfortable and entertained in the dental chair, you’re not alone. Many parents face the same problem each time they take their child in for their dental appointments. The good news is that we can work together to help your toddler have a more successful dental appointment. There are things we will do as a dental team to help. To contribute, you can do the following things:

-Remain calm and relaxed during the appointment. Your child can sense the way you feel most of the time, and if you’re uptight, nervous or anxious, they will likely start feeling that way too.

-Give your child comfort and support during the appointment by holding their hand and reminding them that you are right there watching over them.

-Give your child calming music to listen to. This can help slow their heart rate and even keep their mind off the treatment.

-Let your child watch their favorite television show or movie on your mobile device. This can distract them during treatment.

-Use calm, simple and encouraging words during the appointment. Using complicated and scary words can make your child overwhelmed and nervous, which won’t help your child feel comfortable in the dental chair.
